Have you ever imagined a place where turquoise waters meet snow-capped mountains and endless skies? That’s exactly what we find at Lake Tekapo, located in the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand’s South Island.
Sitting at 710 meters (2,330 feet) above sea level, this lake stretches over 83 square kilometers (32 square miles) and is the second largest of three parallel lakes in the region, alongside Pukaki and Ohau.
The dazzling blue color comes from glacial rock flour carried by meltwater, creating a shimmering, almost magical effect that looks straight out of a postcard.
Getting There
We usually start from Christchurch, about a 3-hour drive (227 km / 141 miles) along State Highways 1 and 8. The route is scenic, passing rolling farmland and snow-capped peaks.
If we prefer public transport, daily coach services run from Christchurch (~$45 per person, 3.5–4 hours) and Queenstown (~$65 per person, 5–6 hours). Renting a car is ideal if we want to stop at viewpoints along the way. Once in Tekapo, the town is compact and walkable, making it easy to explore the lakeshore, cafes, and attractions on foot. Local parking costs $5–$10 at major spots like the iconic lakeside landmark or Mount John Summit.
Best Time to Visit
- Summer (Nov–Feb): Bright turquoise waters, wildflowers in bloom, perfect for kayaking and hiking.
- Autumn (Mar–May): Golden light, fewer crowds, great for photography.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): Snow-capped mountains, quiet atmosphere, fewer tourists.
- Stargazing: May–Sep offers some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere.
