Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, is the perfect getaway for freediving enthusiasts. With its rugged coastline, crystal-clear waters, and a treasure trove of underwater caves, it's an ideal late-summer escape.

The island is home to 17 caves, 5 of which contain lakes, though accessibility and swimming conditions vary.

Exploring the Caves of Kefalonia

- Crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery.

Kefalonia's coastline is renowned for its stunning beauty, with hidden gems waiting to be explored underwater. I, along with Kiri, ventured across untouched beaches and were thrilled to discover rare giant mussels, Pinna Nobilis, a species native only to the Mediterranean. These bivalves, growing up to 120 cm in length, are some of the largest of their kind in the world.

- A friendly local diving shop.

Our adventure took a turn for the better when we connected with Aquatic World, a local shop on the island's east coast. Not only did they provide us with vital geographical insights, but they also lent us some diving lead, making our underwater exploration even smoother.

The Secret Labyrinth of Phreatic Tunnels

- A hidden water system beneath the island.

While chatting with the locals, we learned about the island's underground system. Water is drawn into massive sinkholes on the island's west side and takes up to two weeks to filter through underground karst conduits before it emerges in the Bay of Sami. We were eager to explore these secret tunnels, which are much like Mexico's famous cenotes.

Melissani Cave: A Wonder of Nature

- A mix of sunlight and mystery.

Melissani Cave is one of the most famous cenotes on the island, discovered after the 1953 Ionian Earthquake. Tourists can take a relaxing paddle boat ride through two sections of the cave: one open to sunlight and another that remains mysterious and dark, even with the faint glow of floodlights illuminating the collapsed roof.

Although diving in Melissani is typically forbidden, after some negotiations with the local authorities, we got permission to freedive. The clear, turquoise waters were a sight to behold, with a chilly 57°F temperature and a misty surface created by the temperature difference. The cave's first chamber stretches 50 meters, offering unparalleled visibility and an awe-inspiring experience.

Karavomilos: The Adventure Continues

- The underwater cave system.

We ventured from Melissani to Karavomilos, where the waters from Melissani Lake flow into the sea. A small crevice in the surrounding rock led us to a hidden cave system. Accessible to surface dwellers, the first two chambers were a joy to explore. The clarity of the water, combined with the consistent current, made it one of the most memorable dives of our trip.

Caves on the List for Next Time

Our adventures didn't stop at the well-known caves. We also located two other caves on our list, and we're already planning to dive them during our return trip in September 2016. Agalaki Cave and Zervati Cave both offer exciting opportunities for diving and exploration, each with unique features and stunning underwater landscapes.
