Thailand's Secret

So you're thinking about Koh Lipe? Good call, but let's be real - this tiny island in the Andaman Sea isn't quite the silent paradise you're imagining. It's small (barely 2 miles long), car-free, and yeah, it's called "The Maldives of Thailand" for a reason.
But here's the thing: those first impressions? They might sting a bit. The main Walking Street is packed, longboats are everywhere, and it feels more developed than Instagram suggests. But stick with it for a few days, explore beyond the crowds, and you'll discover why people keep coming back.

Ko Lipe

Where to Stay & Getting Around

Location matters here. Pattaya Beach is where ferries arrive - convenient but chaotic. Sunrise Beach is longest and most popular, though boat traffic can be annoying. Sunset Beach is chiller with better vibes. North Point Beach? That's the fancy stuff - luxurious but pricey. Or skip the beachfront entirely and stay "in the middle" like we did.
Getting around is easy: walk or hop on a tuk-tuk for about $1.40 per person. Scooter rentals aren't really a thing here - the island's too small. Boat taxis run between beaches for short hops.
Practical Info:
Tuk-tuk: $1.40 per person anywhere on island
Boat taxi to Koh Adang: $2.80 per person (10 min ride)
Budget hostels: $15-25/night
Mid-range resorts: $50-100/night
Luxury beachfront: $150-300/night

Best Things to Do

Watch Sunrise on Sunrise Beach
Set that alarm! Head to the southern section around 6am for stunning views. Just ignore the longboats that show up later.
Chill at Sunset Beach
Less crowded, better vibes. Happy local resturant serves drinks for $2.80 during happy hour. Walk north along the beach for the best sunset spots.
Discover Pantai Galah Beach
This is our secret tool. Walk past Han Talay Monastery, follow the dusty road, then take the left trail through the trees. Five to ten minutes later, paradise. No shops, no crowds - just bring everything you need.
Day Trip to Koh Adang
Take the 10-minute boat taxi ($2.80) from Sunrise Beach. Hike up Chado Hill for insane views back over Koh Lipe. The beaches here are emptier and the snorkeling is incredible.
Go Scuba Diving
Single dives run $39-45. The famous Stonehenge site has amazing soft corals. Refresher courses (theory + 2 dives) cost about $106. Don't forget the $5.60 daily national park fee.
Kayaking & Snorkeling
Rent a kayak for $14/day or $2.80/hour. Paddle to nearby islands Kla and Usen for secret sunbathing spots. Or book a full-day snorkeling trip visiting 7 islands - usually $25-35 including lunch.

Where to Eat & Drink

Thai food is everywhere and mostly great. Walking Street has the most options but gets packed. Don't miss the coconut fritters (Kanom Krok) from the guy on the market corner - $0.30 each and absolutely addictive.
Our picks:
Benny's On The Beach: Best vegetarian/vegan spot on Sunrise Beach
Mojo Cafe: Amazing breakfast/brunch (7:30am-1pm), pancakes are life-changing
Thaidurm Restaurant: Fresh fish and massive prawns
Rainforest: Best drink on the island, try the negroni
Bombay Indian Restaurant: Authentic Indian when you need a Thai break

Getting to Koh Lipe

Ferries and speedboats run from Pakbara Pier, plus connections from Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Phuket, and Malaysia. High season is November-May. Book through 12Go website for best prices. Expect to pay $25-45 depending on your departure point.
Look, Koh Lipe won't be everyone's cup of tea. It's developed, it's touristy, and yes, those longboats are annoying. But find the quiet beaches, time your visits right, explore beyond Walking Street, and you'll see why this little island has such a devoted following. Give it three days minimum - that's when the magic happens.
