Water makes up most of our planet, yet less than 3% of it is freshwater, and most of that is locked away in glaciers.
Freshwater is critical to life, supporting ecosystems and human communities alike, but it is under increasing threat from overuse and contamination.
On World Water Day, we celebrate some recent discoveries while acknowledging the threats facing these vital resources.

New Species Discovered in Freshwater

Freshwater ecosystems are still revealing their mysteries, as evidenced by the remarkable discovery of over 300 new freshwater fish species in 2025. This marked the third-highest tally since scientists began keeping records in 1758. Some of the notable new species include:
1. Cave Fish in China
Two cave-dwelling fish species were identified in China, both adapted to life in complete darkness. These remarkable creatures—Yang's plateau loach (Triplophysa yangi) and Sichuan mountain cave loach (Claea scet)—highlight how resilient life can be in extreme environments.
2. Giant Fish in Appalachia
In the U.S. Appalachian Mountains, researchers identified the sicklefin redhorse (Moxostoma ugidatli), a 60-centimeter (24-inch) fish, considered the largest fish species discovered in North America in over a century. This discovery further underscores the untapped biodiversity within the world's freshwater systems.
“Rivers and wetlands are still full of surprises,” said Michael Edmondstone, a spokesperson for SHOAL Conservation. Freshwater ecosystems continue to hold secrets, but they also face unprecedented threats.

The Risk to Africa's Largest Freshwater Lake

One of the most concerning threats to freshwater resources comes from the potential industrial exploitation of these ecosystems. Lake Victoria, Africa's largest freshwater lake, could be at risk if a nuclear power plant is built on its shores. This lake, which feeds into the Nile River, is known for its incredible biodiversity, particularly its freshwater fish species.
In Kenya, plans to build a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant on the shores of Lake Victoria are raising alarm bells. If waste from the nuclear plant were mishandled or an accident occurred, the lake and its surrounding ecosystem could suffer irreparable damage.
The region is one of the most biodiverse freshwater areas globally, and any contamination could disrupt local ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Freshwater Beneath the Atlantic Seafloor

In a surprising scientific breakthrough, researchers drilling for oil and gas off the northeastern U.S. found significant freshwater reservoirs beneath the Atlantic Ocean. This discovery, made during an expedition led by geophysicist Brandon Dugan from the Colorado School of Mines, uncovered freshwater at three separate drilling sites.
These freshwater reserves, thought to have been deposited by glaciers about 20,000 years ago, are not part of the planet's natural groundwater supply. This means they won't naturally recharge and could be susceptible to over-extraction. If accessed, these resources could have a major impact on the delicate ecosystems found on the seafloor.
Dugan referred to the discovery as a “beautiful scientific accident,” but it also highlights the unintended consequences of drilling and resource extraction. While freshwater reserves are critical, they must be managed with caution, especially in such sensitive environments.

Freshwater ecosystems are at the heart of life on Earth, yet they are increasingly under threat. Whether it's the discovery of new species, the proposed risks to Lake Victoria, or the unknown consequences of extracting freshwater from beneath the ocean, the need for sustainable management is urgent.
As we celebrate World Water Day, it's clear that we must prioritize the protection of freshwater resources. Not only do these ecosystems support a wide range of species, but they also play a critical role in human survival. From conservation efforts to innovative solutions, we all have a responsibility to safeguard the freshwater that remains for future generations.
